President Obama
Declaration of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.
January 2012
"Human trafficking endangers the lives of millions of people around the world, and it is a crime that knows no borders. Trafficking networks operate both domestically and transnationally, and although abuses disproportionally affect women and girls, the victims of this ongoing global tragedy are men, women, and children of all ages."
Obama is not the only person helping to end this terrible form of modern day slavery. Google, for example, 11.5 MILLION dollars to organizations that work to end trafficking. Chinese police also stopped two rings that controlled trafficking, rescuing 178 children and arresting 608 suspects, and this was only two rings.
Legal Definitions gave the definition for Chattel Slavery: A civil relationship in which one person has absolute power over the life, fortune, and liberty of another.
UNODC gave the definition of Human Trafficking: a crime against humanity. It involves an act of recruiting, transporting, transfering, harbouring or receiving a person through a use of force, coercion or other means, for the purpose of exploiting them.
The definition on trafficking consists of three core elements:
1) The action of trafficking which means the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons
2) The means of trafficking which includes threat of or use of force, deception, coercion, abuse of power or position of vulnerability
3) The purpose of trafficking which is always exploitation. In the words of the Trafficking Protocol, article 3 "exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs
Chocolate&Slavery
Maybe you knew that chocolate is commonly made in Africa. But did you know that it is also commonly made by child slaves?
Some poor child's hard and undeserved labor has given you cocoa at least once.
Three Important Facts About Slavery
- There are 27 Million Slaves in the world today
- The average cost of a modern day slave is only $90 (less than any phone, iPod, tablet, etc.)
- "debt bondage, bonded labor, attached labor, restavec, forced labor, indentured servitude and human traffi cking." Are all different names, but they all mean SLAVERY (source)
